Like many if not most fields of study their history can be traced back to many different periods of time and people making it difficult to definitely say when something began. Positive psychology is no different. Ancient Greek philosophers spoke of a life of fulfillment, William James in 1908 queried why some people live fully engaged lives and others don’t. There were many behaviorists between then and now all studying various aspects of human behavior. In 1988 Martin Seligman’s challenged the American Psychological Association APA to differentiate between the disease clinical model of psychology and studies in positive psychology and what contributes to happiness and flourishing. Dr. Seligman began the first Masters degree program in applied positive psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Today there are hundreds of program all across the world teaching positive psychology.

Dr. Kokkelenberg is a certified positive psychology practitioner and is a graduate of a 6 month program in positive psychology led by graduates of the University of Pennsylvania and incorporates the principles in his organizational consulting and adult education practices.
